the beginning of summer

There's a few things that I've taken to doing with the kids every year.  One of which is strawberry picking.  It always marks the true beginning of summer for me.  Since our weather was super crazy this year, we picked strawberries a little early.

I loved this patch.  The plants were much neater and the walkways were very organized and bug-less.  Sounds so OCD.  anna got to participate more this year which was fun.  Well, she got to eat more this year.  She did pick way more then jake did...he just wanted to run around and get sticks.

I look back at these phone pics and wonder why I didn't bring the good camera.  Sometimes I get so lazy.  The kids get too much tv or I get short....ummmm yell....when they don't listen.  Such peaks and valleys in motherhood.  Hopefully everyone ends up kinda smart with no ADD and aren't in therapy talking about their lazy, yelling mom.

another year, another truck

jake has always been into things with wheels so we've always made the pilgrimage to the annual touch a truck event in our town.  It always takes place around his birthday so its almost kicks off the birthday festivities.

For the last two years...maybe two and a half...jake has really loved garbage trucks.  That's a long time when you consider its half his life.  He's loved everything about them.  He would even go around the house with Trev to gather all the trash and put it out on the curb.

I think the love of garbage trucks is waning a bit, though.  Monster trucks, Lego City, and Transformers seem to by the newest thing.  Its kind of sad...kinda like Woody and Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story.

The love was still alive during touch a truck, though.

Once we got a working kitchen back, I decided it was time to break in the new table and test out the lighting so I pulled out the play doh.  The light was/is so much better then before.  The table is actually way easier to clean, too.  Sigh.  Its like a breathe of fresh air to see these pics.  Summer was starting and we were getting back into normal life.

the kids like each other

The kids were actually pretty good throughout the renovation.  They really just kind of knew not to touch certain things.

jake is meant to be a contractor or builder.  He's really into it.  He'll even sit and watch an HGTV show with long as it involves demo and building.  I guess he's more of a DIY Network kind of guy.  Trev is really good at letting him help with almost anything.  He's way more patient than I am with letting him try something out.  I just end up getting frustrated because he's not doing it the way I see it.  Its taken many a craft project for me to figure out that jake and I don't share the same vision for anything.

anna dropped some old carpet padding down the new copper pipes.  It was mostly our fault for not covering them.  It was solved pretty easily, though.  We just turned on the water and everything shot out.

I joke...maybe complain...a lot that the kids don't get along.  This past summer they've really started to play together.  Obviously, anna is getting older and understanding how to play more but, jake has really started to take his sister under his wing.  Its fun to hear her say, "help me jake."  Its even better to hear him say, "ok, anna."  There's still some fighting and tears but, the laughter has started to outweigh the cries.

There's still the matter of girl games vs boy games.  anna for sure likes everything girl.  jake for sure likes everything boy.  We had friends over once that were both girls.  One was jake's age and the other was anna's age.  Sisters.  jake didn't know quite what to do when everyone chose to play dress up.

anna is into the family dynamic.  She always points out babies, mommies, daddies, brothers and sisters. She loves Peppa Pig because its always the four of them.

jake is into legos, super heroes, transformers, and garbage trucks.

No matter how different they are, I think I do see a bond forming.  It isn't fast.  Its actually happening quite slow.  Its happening, though.  I think I prefer it be slow.  It seems maybe they may be actually getting to know each other and liking what they find.  Not just a de-facto relationship.

angels sang

I think angels were singing the day the counters were installed.  Seriously.  I loved loved loved this granite.  Its probably the one element in the kitchen that I allowed myself to go over budget on.  It was our splurge, but I think it was worth it.

The kitchen isn't totally put together in these pics, but I think it gives a good idea of the total scope of the renovation.  The two main things we hired out were the new windows...because who really wants to diy a big gigantic whole in the side of your house...the cabinet/granite ended up costing us only a couple of hundred dollars extra to have it installed which isn't really much in the grand scheme of things...and joking, that is an art.  Trev did the demo, rerouted plumbing to include a pot filler and move my sink under the other window, the electrical to add pot lights and fixtures over the counters,  the electrical to give me plenty-o-sockets on the counters, and he installed the wood floors.  Plus, when we got the carpet in the family room, it was too plush to open our back door so he took the old one out and installed a new sliding door.

In case you're wondering where all the old stuff went, a lot of the old cabinets and counters are in our garage.  The rest of it was donated to Habitat for Humanity.

Once the counters were installed, I was super excited to get a working sink.  We had the faucet for about 5 months.  Too bad the thing broke during installation.  I will say Price Pfister sent us a new one no charge.  There was a bit of confusion and we almost got two new faucets but, overall, their customer service was great.

At this point, we still had to install our range hood, subway tile wall, and pot filler.

my little angry bird

Some how jake really got into angry birds.  The day angry birds space came out he reminded me to download it.  The kid actually did chores to make money to download it.  He decided he wanted an angry birds birthday party.  I tried to have a little photo shoot for his birthday invitations.

It didn't go well.  Its really hard to get your kid to do something while you're behind the camera.  Its also really hard to force them into it, hold the camera, and take a picture at the same time.  In the end, it didn't matter because I did a little too much celebrating at TMass's wedding to even put an invitation together.  Everyone got emails instead.  That was probably a bit of a mom fail.
